Satori Jujitsu – Toilet Supervision & Toileting Assistance Safeguarding Policy
Purpose
The welfare and safety of every child attending Satori Jujitsu is our highest priority. This policy sets out the procedures followed when children require the toilet during classes, ensuring that children are appropriately supervised whilst maintaining their dignity and protecting both the child and our coaches.
Scope
This policy applies to all coaches, assistant coaches, volunteers, parents/carers and all children attending Satori Jujitsu sessions.
General Principles
* Every child will be treated with dignity, respect and kindness.
* Coaches have a duty to supervise children whilst attending classes.
* Coaches will always act in accordance with recognised safeguarding guidance.
* Coaches will never place themselves in a situation that compromises either the child’s safety or their own safeguarding responsibilities.
Independent Toileting Requirement
As part of Satori Jujitsu’s participation requirements, all children attending classes must be toilet trained and able to independently manage their general toileting needs throughout the duration of the session.
Children attending classes should be able to:
* Recognise when they need to use the toilet.
* Use the toilet independently.
* Manage their own clothing, including tying, untying, pulling up and fastening gi trousers and underwear. Assistance with removal of Gi jacket and Belt will be issued by coaches before entering the toilet.
* Attend to their own personal hygiene.
* Wash and dry their hands before returning to class.
Parents or carers must disclose any additional toileting needs before their child begins training.
Satori Jujitsu coaches do not provide intimate care or routine toileting assistance. Whilst an occasional unforeseen incident may occur, parents should not expect coaches to routinely contact them to assist with general toileting needs during classes.
Where a child regularly requires parental assistance with toileting or clothing, this indicates that they do not currently meet the club’s independent toileting requirement. In these circumstances, the club may require the child’s participation to be deferred until they are able to safely and independently manage their toileting needs.
Toilet Supervision
* No child will be permitted to visit the toilet completely unsupervised.
* A coach will accompany the child to the toilet area and remain immediately outside the unlocked toilet door whilst the child is using the facilities.
* Coaches will remain within hearing distance and monitor the child’s welfare throughout.
* Coaches will ensure the child returns safely to the training area as soon as they have finished.
Privacy and Safeguarding
To protect both children and coaches:
* Coaches will not enter the toilet cubicle or enclosed toilet area whilst a child is using the toilet except where there is an immediate risk to the child’s safety or welfare.
* This procedure protects the child’s dignity and privacy while ensuring coaches comply with safeguarding best practice.
* Coaches will never provide intimate care.
Assistance with Clothing and Toileting
If a child unexpectedly experiences difficulty managing their clothing or requires assistance that falls outside normal supervision:
* The coach will remain immediately outside the toilet door, maintaining supervision.
* The child’s parent or carer will be contacted and asked to provide any assistance required.
* This should be regarded as an exceptional circumstance and not part of the routine operation of classes.
* Coaches will not enter the toilet to assist with clothing or personal hygiene unless there is an immediate medical emergency or safeguarding concern requiring intervention.
Children Attending Classes
Parents and carers are responsible for ensuring their child is appropriately prepared for class.
Parents must:
* Ensure their child meets the club’s independent toileting requirement.
* Ensure their child’s uniform fits correctly and can be managed independently by the child.
* Inform the club of any additional needs before participation.
* Remain contactable throughout the duration of the class.
Where a child repeatedly requires assistance that falls outside the club’s safeguarding procedures, the club reserves the right to suspend or defer participation until the child is able to meet the independent toileting requirement.
Registration
As part of the membership process, parents/carers are required to provide accurate information regarding:
* Their child’s toileting independence.
* Any additional needs.
* Any medical conditions that may affect toileting.
* Any support their child may require during sessions.
Failure to disclose relevant information may affect the club’s ability to safely supervise the child.
